Dick was brought up in a musical family in Iowa, beginning his professional career in Minneapolis before a move to NYC where he became a member of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. Since then he has performed, recorded and/or toured with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Fred Hersch, Joe Lovano, Kenny Wheeler, Paquito D’Rivera, Terell Stafford, Tito Puente, Jon Faddis and many others. Dick has also been featured with the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra, Danish Radio Big Band, Norboton Jazz Orchestra, Metropole Orchestra, and the UMO Big Band in Helsinki. He has also accompanied such vocalists as Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Nnenna Freelon, Mel Tormé, Milton Nascimento, Luther Vandross and James Taylor. In addition to a lengthy discography, Dick has appeared at numerous jazz festivals as a soloist and clinician throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, Canada, South America and the Middle East. He is a professor of Jazz Studies at the Boyer School of Music at Temple University and has been an artist-in-residence at the Amsterdam Conservatory for nearly 20 years. This is Dick’s first year as an instructor at the Vail Jazz Workshop.
