The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis delves into the American orchestral tradition through the syncopated dance beats of New Orleans, innovative ensemble virtuosity, and the monumentality of swing and the blues. At the forefront of this celebration are the likes of Don Redman, Duke Ellington, and Benny Carter, and other jazz architects which are the foundation of the JALC Orchestra, widely regarded as the “finest big band in the world today.”

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER: PAPO VAZQUEZ MIGHTY PIRATES TROUBADORS

Veteran Latin jazz trombonist and bandleader Papo Vazquez presents the Pirates Troubadours, a seven-piece Afro Puerto Rican jazz combo that melds Caribbean percussion with a blazing jazz horn section. Playing at the iconic Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, his band promises to deliver a hyperkinetic party with some of the most spirited and soulful improvising you’re likely to hear this year.

With “a voice like fine whiskey – oaky and smooth, with a hint of smokiness,” vocalist Cyrille Amiée together with Milton Suggs and pianist Aaron Diehl kick off the evening by celebrating the composers and songs of new Orleans, the historic epicenter of jazz. The evening continues with The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra’s special premiere of the “New Orleans Jazz Market.”
