about the performance
An evening of exotic rhythms, sultry songs, and delectable cuisine, featuring ‘Brazilian jazz’ vocalist, Carol Bach-y-Rita.
Join Carol Bach-y-Rita and a cast of international jazz superstars as they explore the rich musical diversity of Brazil! Jon Challoner (’04) and Hitomi Oba (’01), two alumni of the Vail Jazz Workshop, will support Carol along with GRAMMY-winning pianist and workshop instructor Bill Cunliffe. The star-studded caravan will lead us to the melodic and rhythmic epicenters of Bossa Nova, Samba, Choro and more through their passionate interpretations of the Brazilian Songbook.
The 2018 Vail Jazz Gala: Bossa Nova Nights is a benefit for Vail Jazz education and community engagement programs, which reach 1,400 students and offer more than 35 free world-class performances in the Vail community each year. With a dazzling array of premiere silent and live auction items and a special fundraising appeal, we’ll celebrate, sing, and sway to the music of Brazil while supporting the future of jazz education and artistic diversity in our valley.
vail jazz education and community engagement
Since the organization’s inception in 1995, two things have always remained the same at Vail Jazz: world-class musicianship and superior educational programming. Vail Jazz educational programs strive to engage and captivate young minds, delivering the inspiring sounds and stories of jazz music’s rich history to Eagle County’s youth and beyond. Vail Jazz Goes to School, the Vail Jazz Workshop, Jammin’ Jazz Kids and the Colorado High School Jazz Band Showcase touch the lives of over 1,400 students each year, focusing on two critical areas of jazz education: introduction to jazz music and achievement of mastery-level performance.
Vail Jazz Goes to School takes the basics of jazz education into every 4th and 5th grade classroom in Eagle County. With over 1,200 students participating from the 14 elementary schools, Vail Jazz is exposing a whole new group of youngsters to the origins and history of jazz as well as the elements of modern jazz bands. The program is formatted as a sequential series of four 45-minute lessons that are presented during the course of the school year. The curriculum combines musical performances with elementary discussions of the origin and history of jazz, an art form steeped in American history, geography and diversity. This musical exploration wraps up with an authentic jazz concert with the Jazz Goes to School Sextet presented at the magnificent Vilar Performing Arts Center.
The Vail Jazz Workshop brings together a select group of 12 gifted and promising young jazz musicians who, through scholarships provided by Vail Jazz supporters, participate in a 10 day, rigorous learning experience covering jazz theory, group and private lessons, improvisational and ensemble participation and many performance opportunities. Being selected for the Vail Jazz Workshop is considered one of the most coveted opportunities for pre-college jazz musicians today. The Workshop is directed by John Clayton, bass, Jeff Clayton, sax/woodwind, Bill Cunliffe, piano, Wycliffe Gordon, trombone, Lewis Nash, drums, and Terrell Stafford, trumpet. Each of these exceptional and internationally-respected performers choose to curtail their professional schedules in order to be teachers and mentors for the Workshop.
Jammin Jazz Kids is a hands-on and interactive jazz experience for youngsters 4 to 12 years old during the month of July in conjunction with the Jazz@The Market series on Sundays in Vail Village. During the program, kids will get to play a variety of percussion instruments – maracas, bongos, congas, tambourines and Orff instruments. And they will listen to and join with jazz musicians in playing music and learning what it means to improvise.
Colorado High School Jazz Band Showcase every Sunday in August, talented high school age jazz musicians from around Colorado perform at the Vail Jazz @ The Market, 11:00 am.
