Vail Jazz Festival - Summer of Jazz
The Vail Jazz Festival is an annual celebration of jazz featuring live performances in and around Vail each summer. 2011 marks the 17th anniversary of the Vail Jazz Party, which began the Vail tradition of bringing together great jazz musicians, enthusiastic audiences and a stunning natural setting to create a cool good time over Labor Day weekend. The Festival has expanded over the years to offer live jazz from late June through early September, with free and ticketed jazz performances to delight everyone from children and music lovers to passionate jazz fans the world over.

TONY GULIZIA TRIO
Vail’s Jazz Ambassador Tony Gulizia, keyboard, will join with Max Wagner, tenor saxophone, and Allan Finney, drums, to open the new Vail Jazz Tent at Solaris. The trio will perform tunes from the American songbook, Blues, Latin Jazz and straight ahead Jazz. These three veteran jazz musicians are also top flight vocalists who can deliver that swinging jazz feel whether playing their instruments or crooning one of the classic standards that we all know and love. GINGA BAND
Ginga, a Brazilian-Venezuelan ensemble, brings a vibrant new energy to the Colorado music scene. Their music resonates with the lively sounds of Latin percussion fused with flute, guitar, bass and sax. The sextet features: Bill Kopper (guitar, percussion, vocals); Greg LaLiberte (flute, saxophone, percussion, vocals); Francisco Marquez (guitar, percussion, vocals); Gonzalo Teppa (bass, percussion, vocals, and cuatro - a small Latin American guitar-like instrument); and Raoul Rossiter (drums, percussion and vocals).

SALSA CON JAZZ
Salsa Con Jazz is a new 10-piece band lead by verteran jazz musician Jimmy Trujillo, who hosts the popular KVJZ radio show which the band is named after. Playing Salsa and Latin Jazz while combining the improvisation of Jazz with the incredible groove of the Mambo, Cha Cha, and much more, the Band guarantees that it will move you! Bring your dancing shoes.

TYREE MORRIS AND HEARTS OF WORSHIP
Hearts of Worship is an urban contemporary praise and worship music ministry that combines styles of traditional gospel, retro funk, reggae, salsa, and hip hop. Under the leadership of songwriter, arranger and worship minister Tyree Morris, H.O.W. brings their ministry to the people with harmonious, inspiring and foot stomping sounds that everyone can relate to! The group is comprised of 11 members including vocalists and band members.

JUSTIN ALLISON TRIO
Justin Allison's vocal and guitar styling appeals to the most passionate jazz fan and to the casual listener. His repertoire is drawn from the great American songbook; Cole Porter, Ira and George Gershwin, and Rogers and Hart. Expect tunes from Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, Miles Davis, Nat King Cole, and Dave Brubeck. Brazilian bossa nova and sambas of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Dori Caymmi, Joao Bosco, and Ivan Lins complete his play list. Justin Allison leads the trio, which also includes drummer Allan Finney and Mark Simon on bass.

KATHY MORROW TRIO
Europe, Asia and parts of the Middle East. Her unique energy, vocal range and musical sense are appreciated by all those who experience her performances. Cam Miller, The American Rag, said, "She's Kathy Morrow, a splendid vocalist, who can get up close to a ballad and then sprint through a scat chorus with amazing spirit and enthusiasm." With Morrow on piano and vocals, the trio is completed by Tom Paxton on bass and Allan Finney on drums. Morrow also performs as part of the vocal trio The Fabulous Femmes.

OTONE BRASS BAND
Chock full of happy energy, the Otone Brass Band mixes it up performing music like nobody’s business! Just add a generous supply of Funk, Latin, and Soul, stir in a serious helping of New Orleans Groove and you’ve got the Otone Brass Band!

LIONEL YOUNG BAND
Lionel Young is a high energy performer with a bent for the Blues. Fans of the driven, classically trained Young love his distinctive brand of Blues on the electric violin. His show features not only Young originals but interpretations of Blues classics by Willie Dixon, Leadbelly and Stevie Ray Vaughan. LAURA NEWMAN TRIO
Known for exceptional musicianship, this jazz trio offers an extensive repertoire of original jazz compositions, classic hits, standards, R&B, acid jazz, funk and pop tunes. The enigmatic trio’s unique connection with their audience stems from their honest love of feel-good tunes. Newman, on saxophone, is joined by Vlad Girshevich on keyboard and Judy Frederickson on drums. Also sitting in with the band will be 10 year old drum phenom Alex Girshevich.

TONY G’S JAM SESSION
Tony Gulizia will lead an all-star jam session with a host of surprise musical guests featured in a one-of-a-kind performance to close out the first season of Jazz at Solaris. Jam sessions are always fun and unpredictable so be prepared to enjoy a unique jazz experience with many different musicians creating a memorable afternoon of swinging Jazz.

July 7 CURTIS STIGERS
For two decades, Curtis Stigers has demonstrated that the lines between jazz, pop, soul, rock, blues and even country are not as clearly defined as they may seem. In a trajectory that began with pop/soul albums in the early ‘90s, the vocalist-saxophonist-songwriter has spent the past several years cementing his reputation as a formidable jazz singer.

July 14 HOWARD LEVY AND HIS TRIO
Howard Levy is a Grammy award winning, American harmonicist, pianist, composer, and producer. Universally acknowledged as the world’s most advanced diatonic harmonica player, Howard was a founding member of the Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

July 21 MAGOS HERRERA QUARTET
This Mexico City vocalist blends her classic jazz styling with Latin American melodies and rhythms. The Miami Herald says, "Magos manages to create a new style of Latin scat. It is innovative but clearly jazz and when she does her improvisations of the composed melodies, it is a mind-blowing experience."
July 28 THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE ACADEMY BAND, THE FALCONAIRES
The band's program includes classic Armed Service Songs plus a variety of other musical styles. Classics such as Rossini's "William Tell Overture," and Handel's "Music from the Royal Fireworks", Irish music, Latin selections, selections from the Broadway smash hit "Wicked" and even a touch of bluegrass are all possible with this uniquely American ensemble.

August 4 TOMMY IGOE SEXTET
Drummer Tommy Igoe plays a weekly gig leading the vaunted Birdland Big Band in New York City. Igoe has performed with Stanley Jordan, Art Garfunkel, Lauryn Hill, Patti Austin, David Wilcox and Blood, Sweat and Tears, and he is the principal drummer and associate conductor for the Disney production of “The Lion King” on Broadway.

Singer/pianist Marcia Ball knows how to raise roofs with her infectious, deeply emotional brand of southern boogie, rollicking, roadhouse blues and heartfelt ballads. September 1 CLAYTON BROTHERS QUINTET AND THE VJF ALL-STARS
Grammy winning bassist/composer/conductor John Clayton, Jeff Clayton on saxophone, Terell Stafford on trumpet, Bill Cunliffe on piano and Lewis Nash on drums make up the Quintet. The Vail Jazz All-Stars, a dozen of the most talented high school aged jazz musicians in North America, who will be completing a ten day intensive workshop, will have the opportunity to shine on stage with one of the most accomplished jazz quintets of today.
