Joel Frahm

Joel Frahm’s recording “We Used to Dance” showcases six original tunes as he shows both the chops and lyricism that have made him irreplaceable in two decades as a saxophonist on the jazz scene. Master musicians Kenny Barron on piano, Rufus Reid on bass and Victor Lewis on drums accompany him on the CD, “It was an honor and a watershed experience to make this record with these incredible musicians,” he says. Joel has worked with jazz legends Maynard Ferguson, Betty Carter, Matt Wilson, Larry Goldings, Dewey Redman, Lee Konitz, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Andrew Hill, Ben Allison, Pat Martino, Ingrid Jensen, Dena DeRose, the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and Kyle Eastwood, among others. A Wisconsin native, Joel attended Mason Gross School for the Arts and received his BA in Jazz Performance at the Manhattan School of Music. He has released three CDs “The Navigator,” “Don’t Explain” (with pianist and childhood friend Brad Mehldau), and “Sorry No Decaf” on Palmetto Records. His “Don’t Explain” was the #1 US jazz release for radio play for two weeks (jazzweek.com airplay chart) and on college radio for one week in 2004, (College Music Journal’s airplay chart). DownBeat Magazine’s Critics Poll listed him as a Rising Star in the tenor saxophone category.
